Best way to disable this surveillance tech: do not connect your Smart TV to the Internet 🤷♀️ https://themarkup.org/privacy/2023/12/12/your-smart-tv-knows-what-youre-watching

@doragasu Or just get a TV that allows the user to turn them off at setup. TVs powered by Android/Google TV does that.

@joeo10 Yeah, the linked article shows how to disable it for some models, but... well, I don't trust them. Can you guarantee it is really disabled, or that something like a firmware update won't turn it on again?

@doragasu I have a Sony TV for example and future updates that I did via USB remains that my settings are still respected. I'm sure other TVs that are Android/Google TV powered are the same. I feel they're the only OS that does respect people's settings.

@joeo10 Well, I don't know about Sony, but Google track record is not exactly pristine. They have been caught several times collecting data they should not, like when it was found they were collecting location data even with location disabled, and blamed "a bug". If the software (firmware) cannot be audited, I do not trust big companies.

@doragasu Sadly, there's no true "Dumb TVs" out there. Our only hope is to get in touch with our elected officials and tell them to do something about this issue. I can't see it happening though.
