There are some truths that when you think about them, they can inform your actions. The biggest one is that there is enough food that no human should go hungry. There are enough resources so that everyone can have shelter. The fact that we have hunger and homelessness is a direct result of billionaires and the lack of will to fix distribution of the food and houses. It is a direct result of greed. -> more #NoBillionaires#hunger#homelessness#taxbillionaires
@Bernard — wow. The fact that you feel it is a zero sum game when we have enough for everyone means you’re on the side of greed or you didn’t actually read my post.
@jeffowski Imagine someone is sitting next to the pool and watches a child fall in and drown without doing anything about it. He is a surely a horrible person. Now imagine him watching a million kids drown in the pool.
The other perspective is that the owner class needs to keep people motivated to work in their factories or bullshit jobs. If everybody had their needs met, they would be less likely to work the shit jobs. It is also a zero sum game where if everyone is rich, nobody is rich.
-> This is why I have rage against ANYONE AND EVERYONE that defends billionaires and prevents the change needed to fix this issue. Those people stand in the way of progress and contribute to human death and extend human suffering. There is no better definition of evil than that. It is morally bankrupt to think you’re on some moral high ground to argue any stance when people are starving and sleeping in the streets. #nobillionaires#taxbillionaires#hunger#homelessness
@Bernard -- What I hear you saying is that you're totally invested in the current classism and support a caste system where some people deserve more than others and that we must keep the lower classes down to make sure the menial tasks are done. You have taken a side, whether you think you have or not.
@jeffowski I am not taking a side but rather adding context to understand power dynamics. If we do not understand something, we cannot fix it. When it comes to power, it is basically a zero sum game. If everybody is king, nobody is king. I generally support giving people with less power more, but with few exceptions, those with the power will not voluntarily relinquish it. I am interested to understand a solution you might propose.
@jeffowski It is my observation and understanding that some people wield power over others. I am interested in how they do it to discover how they can be upended or power shifted back to the powerless to ameliorate their suffering from hunger and other hardships.
I am not sure how you read what I said to imply that those in power deserve that power, because I largely do not believe that. I was providing a perspective of those in power.
@Bernard -- So you know there really is no "Devil's Advocate", just the Devil. When you argue both sides when people are suffering from the status quo, you become the evil.
@Bernard -- And the action is changing minds. We either overcome the powerful through democracy or we overcome through revolution. You're invested in the status quo, and I can see it on your feed and in this back and forth. You did so on my post about the fact that we have enough resources and food to house and feed everyone on this planet, how the status quo supports the continued suffering of humans, and how morally bankrupt you have to be to stand in the way of change... Act. Do.
@jeffowski I am not arguing both sides. You need to know the devil to defeat it. Ignorance is a losing strategy. The epic tale of Beowulf is about that. I want you to be better equipped for the battle.
@Bernard -- You're trying to argue for a perfect action or solution, when there is no such thing. That delays action. That delays the doing part. The real answer is to take the knowledge and then do something about it. Vote, volunteer, advocate, donate, and help with whatever your means are. I see you and see you're still invested in status quo. You claim not to be into identity politics but that's all I see.
@ketmorco — so there is enough suitable land for everyone on the planet to have 530 acres to use? And how much is going to be left for wildlife? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a post reply with so much naivety and privilege rolled together.
@jeffowski according to https://www.quora.com/How-many-acres-can-one-person-farm?top_ans=278151323 Peter Kaye "had 530 acres and had absolutely no problems doing everything myself. At the busiest times I plowed all night to get the soil ready for planting, as long as you have the right machinery it’s a lot of work but it can be done."
So... yeah - there's no effing reason anyone, ever, should be hungry (unless they want to be)
@godofbiscuits -- There are more churches in the US than foster kids. If every church simply took care of one foster kid and two homeless people there would be NO FOSTER KIDS AND NO HOMELESS PEOPLE. It's way worse than you think.
I think of these sorts of things whenever I see those stock video clips of suburban streets. House after house after house, each with a 2 or 3 car garage.
Multiply that through by all the houses in this country with those garages. Cars have better housing stock than people.
