It is **always** ok to ask a woman if she is pregnant. The reasoning is simple, if your wrong there is nothing to be ashamed of, there is nothing wrong with being overweight and looking pregnant.

Dear Dr. Freemo: It is always socially awkward to ask if a woman is pregnant, I guess you can take the chance that the woman will not take offense, usually women get really angry if they hear unfavorable comments about their looks. This constitutes a social blunder, there is never a good time to ask if a woman is pregnant. This is equivalent to playing Russian Roulette with a fully loaded handgun!

Dear Dr. Freemo: Women are usually self-conscious about their appearance, most women are not that open minded, no looking pregnant/fat should not be considered "unfavorable," except for the fact that society is not yet that open minded. Trinsec is right, good luck with that, Society puts the undue burden on females to be slim and physically attractive. So women are treated socially different from men within societies regarding how they dress and their body physical appearance. Majority of time men get a social pass for being overweight, not women.
