@bronze xubuntu has never given me one single problem in 4 years. It's "just works" but "I actually mean it and not handwaving a bunch of serious issues this time". The only issue is that the desktop is just a bit too primitive.
No I am not installing arch. It's a gigantic time sink.
I actually haven't had good luck with vanilla Ubuntu either. That means that either: - gnome (and unity) are causing the fuckups or - the configuration that ships with Ubuntu/Kubuntu is garbage and fucking up my system.
Recently I tried gnome on a different distro and it seemed to work pretty well, which leads me to believe that MAYBE it's something in vanilla Ubuntu that xubuntu is somehow fixing.
I admit it's a long shot but xunbuntu has been so good to me that I think it's the closest shot I have to getting a working comf distro.
@RustyCrab >kubuntu >Ubuntu I know you love them, but they're garbage IMO Even KDE Neon, which is supposedly good, is Ubuntu based and also garbage I'd try KDE out on arch / artix, its rolling release and should have the latest features + bug fixes
@bronze yeah but every time o have tried to use it (once with Ubuntu and once on kubuntu) it shits itself and dies and can't complete simple tasks without some complication. Xubuntu is the only distro that never once gave me any trouble so I am am wondering if they have some magical parameters they're setting that could work for me in combination with KDE
@djsumdog@RustyCrab@bronze@skylar the problem with servers is (don't ask me how I know this), many are custom builds for companies like AWS that at the end of their life, go right to a secured ewaste center (sometimes the same company who built them) for disposal.
@RustyCrab@PurpCat@bronze the CPU is supposedly pretty good at single thread performance but it's their own special snowflake ARM-whatever architecture so you can only ever use the software Tim Apple allows folks to compile for it with an xcode loicense the only thing apple's done right on their computers was the screen. had it not been for the retina macbooks, every laptop on earth would still have some piece of shit 1366x768 display.
@bronze it's a shame because KDE legitimately is the best looking desktop out there of any OS imo. It's just every time ive installed it and then tried to copy a big file it shits itself.
@RustyCrab@bronze oh yeah on the topic of MacBooks a few days ago I went to micro center The M3 pros do have fans as seen on ifixit but they actually put them in sane places (pro on the left)
@RustyCrab yeah, I would stick with XFCE then. Ubuntu anything with KDE has always been utter trash in my experience and you will not have a good time with that either.
@mischievoustomato@RustyCrab@bronze@skylar the issue with games is when you render them low res and scale them up, it looks like you're playing games on an Xbox on a wal-mart TV.
@skylar@PurpCat@RustyCrab@bronze for tastes, colors i run my laptop at fractional scaling,.so it renders at 3072x1536 and battery impact is nonexistent. the extract impCt would come from games or video watching, but even then for games i just remder at half res and for video, stuff keeps getting more efficient i SNEED sharper fonts and icons and ui
@mischievoustomato@PurpCat@RustyCrab@bronze i would rather have 1600x1050 or 1920x1200. i like smol laptops, extra pixels just waste GPU power, and DPI scaling still doesn't play nice with all applications. bright enough to be usable in direct sunlight and viewable while wearing polarized sunglasses are nicer than extra pixels just to force folks to DPI scale
