If you're a Google Chrome user, I'm urging you to read through this comic and ask yourself if you'd still like to be a chrome user:

It pains me to say this but modern Firefox just sucks. I've been using it for an extremely long time and I see the decline.

Opera GX is gamer bait. It's literally chromium with a different skin and spyware.

@Arcaik @dushman @kvuzet as I said above, make Firefox less slow and ugly and I'll use it 😂 untill then I'll stick to opera GX xD

(Virtually) no one is going to use a slower annoying and uglier browser out of principle.

@dushman @kvuzet Tor developers fully disagree with you. Ask them and they'll tell you, it's harder to “degooglize” Chromium than it is to simply secure Firefox.

Plus this is just one of the issue. Another big one is Google having a monopoly on browser means *they* get to decide what makes the web and this is a huge issue.

@Arcaik @UkeBLCatboy @dushman @kvuzet also this is a valid use i think, my brother doesn't want to pay for a vpn, and apparently the opera gx vpn is like actually a good vpn they just limit the free version to in browser only to get users, so anyways he uses a browser extension torrent client and basically just uses it for that, which is pretty based tbh

thats not any better. the point still stands its a "hard limit" in that the system can only do so much, as opposed to the software itself

@dushman @kvuzet @UkeBLCatboy @Arcaik not everyone is on linux, thats not user friendly, also cgroup is not as good, it's a hard maximum. like oom, it's better to have software itself do these limits and have a soft safe handling than the kernel doing it blind to the effects on software. if you get to high with something like cgroups it can introduce issues, the browser doing it itself though would be smart about it, unloading tabs or however it manages to do these limits. it's absolutely not a replacement though it is better than nothing

@dushman @kvuzet @Arcaik @mja I found out later, but thanks for the tip! However, it still messed up with the monitor 😂

I prefer when things just work out of the box, like kde neon and kubuntu. If I had one monitor, deepin would be the same, but it just barely fell short with that second screen. (And the not having a pastel pink theme, guy or not, I love pink 🩷)

      @mja @dushman @kvuzet @Arcaik yeah xiami is awesome and indeed cheap 😎

But Huawei has deepin, which has an eula literally stating your data can be send to mainland china, and it wass still worth it for that pretty taskbar 😂

However, after a month I went back to kde neon (dual boot with winoldows, mostly for Genshin without weird workarounds), because deepin while great in most ways didn't like my weird dual monitor setup

@mischievoustomato @dushman @kvuzet @UkeBLCatboy i think so too, but the issue is it uses so much memory and i think it tries to give itself a higher priority? i forget? and one thing linux absolutely sucks at is memory management tbh, if it gets too high pressure, which it often does to itself with caches, a lot of other starts freezing up or having issues or running slowly or gets oom killed when it really doesn't need to be. i mean i find myself having to use /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches on a fairly regularly basis to get back performance on my main machine, and this was far more excasterbated an issue when i ran a chromium browser (both ungoogled and qutebrowser) because it just put on so much pressure
palemoon especially how i have it configured uses relatively little memory so its cozy
about:performance says it uses 1,9gigs rn, 42 tabs, including a heavy webapp and two long loaded videos on invidious, 14 addons
if i run with few performance addons, good memory tweaks, and dont have any media/js heavy sites in use i've been able to browse with it usings as little as 170megs at one point for a few tabs ( i found one screenshot with 167 megs on palemoon but it would dox me lol)

      oh
i thought you had memory tweaks for like, linux itself
ever since i discoevered the knobs and experimented with them, plus enabled zram, i dont really care much about memory usage until im at 100% memory and like 10+GB of swap (zram, actually about 3GB in memory)

@mischievoustomato @dushman @kvuzet @UkeBLCatboy i dont remember i've been using this profile fucking forever lmao
i use suspendor addon, some tweaks with palemoon commander, some with about:config
      beyond that idk lol
if your using chromium based browser, idk how to do in main chrome, but theres a low end device mode that helps a lot, i had it set to always on qutebrowser. also if your browser lets you tweak it, single process is great (although i would say its riskier under chromium where it's not designed to handle tabs issues without crashing them, like you wont get a "stop this script" popup or anything), lower cache max and size might help or might detriment further, some other things, really its just trial and error
i think something with the garbage collector or session and disk cache on palemoon was the main thing but again idr

also i find chromium to use less memory on average compared to firefox and to also behave much better than Firefox under memory pressure.
i have my own memory tweaks (sysctl + zram) so i wanna know
