@tchambers @cultdev @mike @mmasnick I wouldn't call a FEP a "de iure" standard -- no law to back it up :-)
But other than that, as I said, all it needs is for somebody to drive this and make it so.

@dave @J12t @tchambers @cultdev @mmasnick I think linking up RSS with ActivityPub is a really great idea. The key thing to figure out here is the UI so non techies can easily use it. I have not seen the blue sky implementation you’re talking about but will check it out.

i like this approach, but i have a better one imho.
let's start with feeds and build as much of a mastodon as we can, without inventing anything new and see what we come up with.
that way we know at every step we're standing on a solid foundation of interop.
at the same time invest in the feed support of every contender, no matter what "verse" its part of.
john spurlock has done an exemplary implementation of RSS 2.0 feeds for Bluesky. That format should be copied everywhere. he did it in about a week in july and it's great. we're building all kinds of stuff on it. wish it were in mastodon, and wish bluesky would bake it in.
forget about clubs, what we want is interop, maximally as widely as possible to force the silos to get on board. they won't unless they have to.

On further thought, we really should make a minimal feature list that -- independent of any particular implementation or standard -- we'd like the #fediverse to implement. Beyond basic microblogging, it would probably list things such as portable social graphs (and perhaps content?), moderation/reporting functionality, perhaps single-sign-on, one-click follow etc.And then work backwards to what standards work this needs.
@dave @J12t @tchambers @cultdev @mmasnick Oh I see. This is an RSS feed of my activity on BlueSky. While that's certainly nice I think it's a bit challenging to see a list of posts I can't directly interact with. This is where ActivityPub comes in... i.e. hit a reply or favorite button on the item in the RSS feed and that signal travels back to the person who did the original post.

Mike, here's your feed.

I asked ChatGPT for a list of 20 popular feed readers.

@dave @J12t @tchambers @cultdev @mmasnick That said RSS is clearly a massive unlock for discovering and consuming content and I agree that it should play a big role in the future of the open social web.
@dave Yes that's exactly what ActivityPub enables - a two way interactive model for syndication inclusive of following, liking, boosting, replying as well as blocking and reporting.
I think RSS+ActivityPub is like peanut butter and chocolate.
i bet we could figure out a way to go from a comment in that feed to writing a reply to it without too much work. is that all that ActivityPub is doing for you? (straight question, I've never been able the figure out exactly what it does).
I also took the other people off cc.
