I find it ironic that people appeal to Victorian era ideals and sensibilities to argue that the west is sexist and patriarchal.

@ned are you saying those victorians weren’t enlightened? They even let the president’s daughter drive a motor-carriage!

@charliebrownau @Codeki "The State" is not some special thing that recently came into existence. It's just a word we use to describe the people in charge. There have always been people in change. I would suggest what you have a problem with is the managerial nature of those people.

@charliebrownau @ned Patriarchy means that men have authority, and do everything important. Non-patriarchy means women have authority, and men have to do everything important without getting any of the benefits of having all the responsibility.

@Codeki @ned Disagree
Patroracy = Men have the authority
Statism = The State has the Authority
With Statism you remove the authority from
Small Business
Small Farms
Family
Fathers
Mothers
Men
Community
and transfer it ALL to the ((( STATE ))) -

@ned Does anyone actually really know what Patriarchal/patroracy
ACTUALLY was
Since you cant have National Federal Statism
and
Patroracy
Either men have the AUTHORITY with the responsibilities, burdens and demands
or the STATE has the authority -

@ned Who does that? I tend to associate that age with workhouses and colonialism.
Is it because of Victoria herself? I know she fought hard to obtain her birthright…
I quite like Victoria sponge cake but that’s a different thing all together.

@PonyPanda the Victorian era is named after the Queen of England at that time. Queen Victoria. 1837 to 1901. In this thread not a few minutes ago someone made reference to only men having the right to vote during that era, and linking that directly to the word "patriarchy". Meanwhile the ruler of the largest Empire on earth was a woman. Hense the irony.

@charliebrownau @Codeki lol ever heard of the word Empire? There has been a few of them prior to 1750. Most of which were none of the things you described.
The way I see it is there are 4 classes of people in society. Merchant, Warrior, Priest, and Plebeian. At any one point in history, a civilization has one of these classes in power, backed by another, at the expense of the other 2. At least that seems to be the general sway of political power.

@ned @Codeki I disagree
National Federal Statism is RECENT
and part of the NEW WORLD (after 1750)
Before that it was
de centralised
District/Local based
Self Goverenced
We didnt need TAX, GST/VAT , Income Tax
or to steal Money from working class -

@charliebrownau @Codeki Through most of history it's been the Warrior class backed by the Priest class. Or visa versa. Then at some point the Warrior class ditched the priests and got their backing from the merchants instead. Sometime around the East India Company. That eventually flipped to the merchants in charge. Who then ditched the warriors for the plebeians. Which is what we see today.
Side note, I see the military industry complex as merchants, not warriors.

@charliebrownau @Codeki It's the governing style of merchants specifically that exhibit all the traits that you so despise.

@ned no no. I was wondering if people actually use "Victorian" to describe a state with a female sovereign in common parlance. -
