Judd Legum reports on the testimony given by mysterious Lanah Burkhardt before the Conroe, Texas, school board. Burkhardt wants books censored, especially Scholastic Books. She claims that reading a Scholastic Book with the phrase "a single kiss" turned her into a porn addict when she was 11 years old.

After hearing her, the Conroe board voted to restrict access to the book she claims made her a porn addict.

@wdlindsy I am surprised she didn't go after Jane Austin, given all the ejaculating that happens all over the place in those stories ;)...

But as J. Legum reports, Burkhardt did not tell the school board that she's an employee of Brave Books, a partner of Sky Book Fairs, which promoted her appearance before the school board. And that she was home-schooled, so a school library cannot have given her access to the book she claims turned her into a porn addict.

Brave's' agenda is to substitute real books with ones produced by Brave, which are pure right-wing propaganda.

@joshourisman @wdlindsy it is also funny how language and usage patterns may change...

@gnutelephony @wdlindsy omg. My niece damned near gave me a heart attack when we were reading Anne of Green Gables when she was 9, and instead of asking me what ‘ejaculated’ meant, she just tapped on the word on the Kindle screen to look it up.

@wdlindsy @johnshirley2024 indeed, it seems very possible several different people managed to successfully do this in different locations, and probably even more tried, as well.

@johnshirley2024 @gnutelephony I wonder if we're taking about two different people when we use the word "she"? I was talking about Lanah Burkhardt, but it sounds as if you're talking about someone else here?

@wdlindsy @gnutelephony I mean--she made her point to the whole country. It was national news. Not big front page news but it made the papers. Her point was that banning books is stupid. She was against banning them. She was demanding they ban the bible --and there is very disturbing material in it, like Lot's daughters seducing and screwing their father--so that they could see how absurd banning books is.

@johnshirley2024 @gnutelephony If by made her point, you mean that the Conroe school board listened to her and acted on her rant, then, yes, she made her point. The school board was predisposed to listen and side with her.

@johnshirley2024 @gnutelephony My understanding is the Utah school district banned the bible in elementary and middle school libraries, and then there was a hullaballoo and the district dropped the ban. But they did ban the bible before being forced to drop the ban.

@wdlindsy @gnutelephony actually I think what happened in Utah is a lady sued to get it repressed only because she wanted to show how unreasonable book banning was. Basically was saying if you ban these books then you have to ban the bible too, idiots. I don't *think* it was ever banned though. Maybe I'm wrong and missed that development?

@gnutelephony Or the bible, which a school district in Utah banned because it's chock-full of smut.
