hmm, this seems to apply to some other types of compliments, too.
For example, "You look great in that shirt" vs "That shirt looks great on you" and "You have such great ideas" vs "I love your idea"

There is that ageism when it comes to looks here, too.

I think it's like saying "You're smart... as a woman." It's no different than saying "You're smart for a woman."
Always just say "You look great!" or "You're smart!"... because that really simply means you're a smart or great looking PERSON. It's a true compliment without implying any qualifier.
