For the record, you can (but possibly shouldn't) resize a mounted b-tree fs partition with:
btrfs filesystem resize max /
Previous to this step, I also forced parted to resize a mounted partition.
You're entitled to tut or suck your teeth in horror at this, but I'll note that the VM in question is regularly backed up, so the stakes for being a slapdash fool were low.
