I have this issue where I'd like to have as much screen real estate for my apps as possible, while I at the same time need to be able to see what time it is with just a glance.

Spending a line across the whole of the screen just for the clock seems like such waste for me!

I need some other stuff on that line from time to time too, but those few time's I'm fine with pushing Super to see the line in the Overview. The clock is the important part, and that's tiny.

I've tried using the extension Dash to Panel to move the line from the top to the side, and that does help. But still!

(and there's this very annoying bug/thing where maximized windows think the line is at the top and changes size to fit that after every time the screen locks)

What I'd love to see is an extension that switches the line (what's it called?) out with a small "nook" (notch? ;)), kinda like the original wing panel of elementary – except with only the clock (or pref for what it should contain, ofc).

You should get to move it and change its level of opacity, and it should float above windows. When moving your mouse close to it it should get transparent. It should not receive any clicks, so you can work on whatever's below.

The rest of the stuff that's on this line – which I guess normally is called the top bar? – is totally fine for me to just have access to trough however you like to open the Overview.

It would be especially cool if the extension would the tweak the bar in the Overview too, so that the clock on it is on the same place as the overlay clock. So if you have the clock on the right side, the bar is on the right side, with the clock on the same place. The switch from overlay to bar could be seemless

@kjetil_kilhavn I love that they have this option! (of course they do 😅) But no, I've tried other DEs, and always come crawling back to Gnome. The workflow is just superior, for me.

@forteller Is this important enough that you would try KDE Plasma? There you can add a panel with only a clock widget, size and align it as you want and set the visibility to Windows go below. You can control the opacity as well.
