   New theory... The **only** intellectual thing that seperates us from the rest of animals is the ability to do math.

   All the things we dont usually think of as math but we associate with being human is in fact math... language is math, logic is math, its all math... language is simply our ontology we use to express logic as symbols we can express. We have a natural intuitive understanding (well some of us, to some extent) of prepositional logic and language is more or less a manifestation of that.

     @freemo Counter: the ability to express feelings on a meta level is not dependent on math, and also an important factor.

     Animals can express emotions too, so that isnt somethign we "gain" through language. In fact the only thing we gain through language is the ability to express logic attached to those emotions:

     "You punched me in the face"

     "I dont like being punched in the face"

     "Therefore if you punch me int he face I wont be happy about it"

     the only thing language is adding here is to express the logical consequences of actions towards my emotions. Without language I could have expressed my emotions in such a situation just fine but I couldnt express the why.

     @freemo The "meta level" is what i mean.

     I can express that some detail of what you do might be relevant to my emotional response or i might say that an emotion is not because of what you did, just coincidence that you are here to see the emotion.

     An animal could only express the emotion itself, not descriptions around (the meta part).

     Language is a part of this, if other factors are relevant is kind of unclear - lacking animals with language to test that.

     @admitsWrongIfProven language is just a common term for "ontology" and ontology is just a term for "the way we describe logic".

     Even if you express to me that your emotion is just coincidence and not related to anything I did, that is **still** an expression of logic not emotion. You are telling me that the things that effects your emotion, and my actions, are a disjoint set.

     If you read Harari (if you haven't read his first book, you should, it is really great), he explains very nicely that the main differences between us and other animals are the ones that help us to collaborate and have collective goals and planning: language, creativity, shared ideas and dreams... We are much, much better.

     Math and logic are a form of language, so we are naturally much, much better than animals at it.

     @freemo If you subsume everything under math, that would work i guess. It just makes math such a wide term that i begin to doubt it actually means anything anymore.

     Say if physics can be described by math, and what it means to have a new idea too, at some point you are just saying "a thing exists" by saying it is math. A bit pointless?

     I would restrain math to the basic thing (calculating with known quantities after we make an abstraction), and keep the connection to physical things (like emotions as complex processes of a biological and electrical nature) separate until we have a mathematical model of them that actually works - including simulating the real thing with any accuracy.

     If you don't do that, i think you are assuming an ability that does not exist, and as such making a mistake of proposing something that is not feasible.

     Sidenote: i did mention the lack of clarity if anything beyond language is needed for meta talk about emotions. That part stands independently of the ontology mixed into math thing.

     @jgg i disagree, they arent doing math, being able to add and subtract something isnt "doing math", thats doing calculations, not math. Math is the ability to represent the world symbolicly and manipulate those symbols.

     At least within this context.

     @admitsWrongIfProven Noit everything is under math no.

     Math is the ability to represent the world symbolically an manipulate it using objective provable abstract logic.

     Adding two numbers isnt math, writing "1+1=2" and understanding the meaning of those symbols and how they relate to the act of addition is math.

     Everything falls under math because math is just another language. As with any language it is expressive enough to describe anything, so everything falls under math in much the same way everything falls under language, not that everything **is** language but that everything can be expressed in language.

     @freemo Hmm. Language is a prerequisite of math, then, is it not?

     It just remains that i see no proof that language alone would enable meta level assessment of emotions... a thing we cannot know, i guess.

     Language **is** a math, not a prerequisite. I can say anything I can say with language in math and vice versa.

     MAth is just a clearly less ambiguous manifestation of language, nothing else. Using prepositional logic and set theory notation I can turn any sentance into a mathematical expression that says the same thing, and vice versa.

     Well, it seems really hard to design an experiment to know if animals have abstraction capabilities.

     I think they must have some; knowing if a random animal belongs to your species or not is in itself a form of abstraction.

     Creating symbols and managing them is really what language is about; and math is the most formalized and strict of them. Since animals have very limited language abilities, it is not surprising their math abilities are (nearly?) undetectable.

     Well, it seems really hard to design an experiment to know if animals have abstraction capabilities.

     Its actually quite easy… you try to teach them to understand english. If they can, they have the ability, if they cant, they dont. Even humans can understand languages without being taught translations through exposure.

     The key is either animals are more advanced than us at symbolic manipulation in which case they would understand english and we wouldnt under stand them, or vice versa, we are the smarter of the two and we would understand their language (and see the symbolic manipulations within it).

     The fact that they cant hold a conversation and do math is in and cant be taught, is in and of itself proof.

     That said some chimps may be just barely capable (like koko who clearly could perform simple speech)… but beyond chimps it would seem easy to disprove by demonstration.

     I think they must have some; knowing if a random animal belongs to your species or not is in itself a form of abstraction.

     Seeing an animal and feeling a kinship towards it or wanting to engage with it differently certainly shows some awareness as to their similarity, but doesnt show a symbolic understanding, they do not create symbols that represent those concepts, they just know the concepts.

     Since animals have very limited language abilities, it is not surprising their math abilities are (nearly?) undetectable.

     I would only loosely call what most animals do language.. They are more like vocal signaling than language.. unless we talk about koko or something.

     Well, it doesn’t seem fair to put the litmus test on english. Why not on spanish? It would be easier for me 😆 And a chinese could put it really hard for both of us. And an alien could make all of us like a chimpanzee.

     We can’t use human rules to measure other animals, it has to be something more neutral.

     Anthropologists and biologist had made great efforts to find a really neutral way to measure cognition and conscience in animals, and they haven’t uncovered even the tip of the iceberg.

     That’s why I recommended Harari’s book; as an anthropologist, knowing the differences between humans and other animals is a key part of his job.

     may not be easy but if you were stuck in china youd be able to learn it, a cat couldnt.

     We can’t use human rules to measure other animals, it has to be something more neutral.

     We arent using human rules, we are using objective general rules. We can understand the vocalizations of most animals well enough to know their not symbolic in nature, and we know they cant understand us. The rules are bidirectional.

     A super advanced alien could understand our language, we may be incapable of understanding theirs. but the point is one of us (the more advanced one) can understand the other.

     Dear Dr. Freemo: I am still trying to grasp formal logic, but I believe this new theory parallels what I am beginning to learn in formal logic and prepositional logic. 1.Only Human beings can do math and 2. All things are math.

     Human music 🎶 would be also based upon math.

     Monica Andrews: I can see that this is highly technical in nature. I do realize that formal logic and prepositional logic are different from mathematical theorems. If all things are based upon math, I would postulate that they have distant relationships with each other. I will continue to separate formal logic and prepositional logic from your new theory.
