     @xipo I wonder, is it only English (and perhaps French) which have a weird vowel pronunciation? I mean, like instead of "ah" it's "ey". So, instead of "grey", which makes sense, it's "gray" (with a "grey" pronunciation).

     @youronlyone This is an older toot, so maybe it has been answered already.

     It's mostly English. During the Great Vowel Shift, [a:] became [eɪ]. It also happened in other Germanic languages, but English did not adept the spelling to the new pronunciation. Modern English spelling still reflects, how English was spoken some hundred years ago.
