This five-cent stamp featuring the eternal flame from his grave in Arlington National Cemetery and words from his inaugural address was the first US commemorative dedicated to him (a 13-cent stamp followed in 1967)

  #JFK was assassinated OTD 1963. His last public speech, delivered a month earlier at the groundbreaking for Robert #Frost #Library, Amherst College, is considered one of his greatest.
  Best known for its soaring praise of the artist in society and the call to measure a nation's greatness by its culture rather than power alone, it in fact began with a plea for educated elites to recognize their privilege and "to put back into our society."

  2. Privilege is here, and with privilege goes responsibility. And | think, as your president said, that it must be a source of satisfaction to you that this school's graduates have recognized it. | hope that the students who are here now will also recognize it in the future. Although Amherst has been in the forefront of extending aid to needy and talented students, private colleges, taken as a whole, draw 50 percent of their students from the wealthiest 10 percent of our Nation. And even State universities and other public institutions derive 25 percent of their students from this group. In March 1962, persons of 18 years or older who had not completed high school made up 46 percent of the total labor force, and such persons comprised 64 percent of those who were unemployed. And in 1958, the lowest fifth of the families in the United States had 4 1/2 percent of the total personal income, the highest fifth, 44 1/2 percent. There is inherited wealth in this country and also inherited poverty. And unless the graduates of this college and other colleges like it who are given a running start in life-- unless they are willing to put back into our society, those talents, the broad sympathy, the understanding, the compassion--unless they are willing to put those qualities back into the service of the Great Republic, then obviously the presuppositions upon which our democracy are based are bound to be fallible.

    Remarks at Amherst College on the Arts | JFK Library
    
    At the end of October 1963, President Kennedy flew to Amherst College in Massachusetts to take part in a ceremony in honor of the poet Robert Frost who had died in January of that year. In deciding what he might say, the President decided upon Frost’s inaugural theme of poetry and power and the significance of Robert Frost and of poetry for the United States and for the world. In the thousand days of his administration, President and Mrs. Kennedy had sparked a revival of national interest in matters cultural and intellectual. In this speech delivered on October 26, 1963 before an estimated crowd of 10,000 people, President Kennedy made clear the need for a nation to represent itself not only through its strength but also through its art.

  President John F. #Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas OTD 1963.
  He gave his last public speech here on
  October 26, 1963 at the groundbreaking of the Robert Frost #Library at Amherst College. For good reason, it is considered one of his greatest.
  Ann & Joseph Blumenthal (typographer and publisher of Frost's poetry) produced 600 copies of this keepsake as their holiday greeting for 1964-1965. The woodcut is by Fritz Kredel
