@CynAq @ptvirgo @foxes_in_love I do this often. I've started to bracket it with something like "Wow. That really sucks and it's happened to me before, so at least I can show you you're not alone in feeling this way." Naming the intent has really helped set the tone.

Many autistic people will show empathy by telling a similar anecdote from their own lives in response to vents. It’s not an attempt at one-up-manship nor is it pity olympics. It’s how they show they care after listening, analyzing, relating to and feeling your suffering.
