    As Google/YouTube seems to be up to new shenanigans (https://mastodon.bentasker.co.uk/@ben/111442472204337543), a reminder that the Fediverse has an alternative called PeerTube:

    ➡️ https://fedi.tips/peertube-video-hosting-on-the-fediverse/

    You can follow and interact with PeerTube accounts/videos entirely within Mastodon, you only need to join PeerTube if you want to publish videos or playlists.

    If you do want to publish videos, there's a guide here:

    ➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-to-publish-videos-and-audio-on-peertube/

    If you want to see an example of PeerTube in action:

      @feditips i would like to get advices about peertube searchers which look for in all federated peertube instances. I have only try the sepia search and the search inside Thorium app although in the later i feel results depend on the instance in which i am...

      @antoniovr

      Sepia search is probably the nearest to searching everything on PeerTube, but the problem is the low quality of search results precisely because it searches everything (except for accounts on their blocklist).

      I've tried an alternative approach on https://fedi.video where there's an allowlist of accounts, so a greatly reduced amount of search results but a much higher quality.

      @feditips I use YouTube too much. I’m going to start learning. There’s no reason why I can’t put my ant content there since I only use Youtube as a host for posting here and on tumblr. I’m gonna learn! (make an effort)

      @feditips I figured it out. I had to do it differently than the directions on fedi.tips. Go to channel->subscribe->remote follow-> (enter username@instance)->Redirect to my instance -> follow account

      @feditips Yes, the copy paste, search on my instance did not work. It does show up after I subscribed remotely with 1 follower, so I think I'm the first for a lot of these channels on my instance. And once there's one follower they will show up

      If you're copy pasting the entire address (@ something @ server) it should show up even if you're the first person to enter it.

      Searches won't work, but the full address should work.

      The federation doesn't make any difference.

      When you paste a full account address, that is enough for your server to locate the other server, even if it has had no contact with the other server before.

      @feditips It didn't work until I remotely followed at least one channel from vtr.chikichiki.tube, so it may have not been federated with my server until now. After that explicit searching with the user address worked. Now other channels on vrt.chikichiki.tube can be searched via the fedi.tips directions. I tried the way on fedi.tips initially and it was not working until my follow.

      I've just tried it on my single user server, and it worked there too, even though my server is not federated with that server.

      @feditips Not sure. I tried searching for it last month, too. It wasn't until today that I saw that remote option, and copy and pasting my own channel address wasn't what 'remote follow' wanted. It would be nice for users to have those directions, too. I had to look at the HTML to figure out remote follow wanted it in (username)@(instance) format for my username

      Ah okay, that's really weird, sounds like something somewhere is broken then...

      Sorry about that! Hopefully this doesn't happen for other addresses 🤞

      The problem with remote following is you have to keep logging in again and again whenever you're on a different server. I did a page about it here:

      https://fedi.tips/remote-following-on-mastodon/

      It's much easier to just log in once on your own server, then paste in the addresses as you want to follow them.

      When there was the huge wave of new people last year, remote following was one of the most confusing things they complained about, so I'm trying to steer people away from that.

      @feditips I don't know if I understand 100%. After entering in my info to Remote Follow I got a redirect to follow on my home instance and that's the first time I saw the channel on my instance. From there I followed locally. So I don't know if this is a 'true' remote follow based on what you're saying. I never logged into their server, but it did force some kind of search to pick up the channel finally on my instance.

      @signalkilled

      Remote follows aren't logging in on the other server, but they are proving your identity to the remote server.

      If you go to the websites of several different servers and try to do remote follows on each of them, you may need to do this proof several times.

      Even if you're on desktop, you're still having to enter your account address every single time, which also caused a lot of annoyance... :/

      There's a Firefox browser extension called Simplified Federation which removes the need to do this, but most people won't be using it.

      @feditips Ah, I think I see why. I'm on desktop. It doesn't prompt me for my credentials so it's a bit smoother and just looks like a redirect. Mobile will ask for proof if you're not logged into your instance in your browser. I'm assuming this is confusing if a user is using Tusky or other client and doesn't understand or doesn't want to login to Mastadon on their mobile browser.
