Irish 🇮🇪 #geoweirdness, secrets strange and bold,
across the isle, an odd tale to be told.
    Cork to Donegal,
    we'll unveil it all -
in this thread, the story will unfold.

So, in fact, there isn't really a border that could be policed. Statistically, people can cross every 1.66 kilometers.

Just like the Hadrian's Wall of old in Britain, there is one country with the remnants of an archaic border...

      3. Ireland 🇮🇪 is part of the EU 🇪🇺, and the land border and freedom of movement with the UK 🇬🇧 proved to be a tricky point to resolve in Brexit negotiations.

The "border" itself is 499km long with about 300 crossings, often entirely unmarked.

      2. First of all, some clarification on terms: Ireland is an island in the north Atlantic.

The island is divided between the country Ireland 🇮🇪 (Éire in Irish, and
sometimes referred to as the "Republic of Ireland" or simply "the Republic") and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom 🇬🇧.

        Names of the Irish state
According to the Constitution of Ireland, the names of the Irish state are Ireland (English) and Éire (Irish). From 1922 to 1937, its legal names were the Irish Free State (English) and Saorstát Éireann (Irish). The state has jurisdiction over almost five-sixths of the island of Ireland. The rest of the island is Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland adopted the terms Republic of Ireland (English) and Poblacht na hÉireann (Irish) as the official descriptions of the state, without changing the constitutional names. The terms Republic of Ireland (ROI), the Republic, the 26 counties or the South are the alternative names most often encountered. The term "Southern Ireland", although only having legal basis from 1921 to 1922, is still seen occasionally, particularly in Britain. Until the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, British government and media declined to use the name Ireland, preferring Eire (without accent) until 1949 and Republic of Ireland thereafter. @HistoPol

Is even more complicated than that. Back when the border issue was discussed in view of brexit, I remember someone on the bird site saying that the border follows his father backyard fence (can't remember which side was what) and I don't think that is the only case

From a global perspective the partitioning of #Ireland, #Brexit, and the #Crown are all anachronisms, living on borrowed time but to the detriment of the peoples of the islands...

There is no "splendid isolation" anymore, if there ever was. (#Mercantilism didn't do all that well historically.)
No islanders are able to go it alone, in particular not in a world of rising sea levels.

The threatened peoples of the #Pacific see this clearly, and...

How much more of the (colonial) wealth must be destroyed in order for the people to rebel against such macroeconomically insane policies?
