@lyza@akkoma.risenvalkyrie.xyz Personally I don't think it will ever be considered "retro".

The PS3 marked the shift from local, physical games to online only, games as a service and things like that.

Game collecting for the PS3 is simply pointless as half of the games no longer function due to the servers not existing, or patches of games no longer being available or other similar stuff. Like seriously more than half of this console's library is either unplayable right now or will be unplayable in the near future.

Meanwhile if you own a PS2 or another retro console it still works exactly as it did on launch day. You just insert the disk and you play the game. Like any true retro games console it functions like a time capsule and the experience can never be degraded by external factors outside of your control. Simply because these devices haven't been poisoned by a reliance on the internet.

@SuperDicq @lyza because it's never obsolete and every new console was a straight downgrade

@saidsoftly@retro.social @lyza@akkoma.risenvalkyrie.xyz I guess some titles on that console that will require no updates and no online functionality will be considered retro game candidates. However a large portion of the PS3 library will be unplayable.

@SuperDicq @lyza I feel this in some ways, but it's also pretty smooth to play ps3 games that didn't have network features off of the hard drive or a network share. it felt like a standard retro experience when I played time and eternity, and I bought this console new in 09!

@saidsoftly@retro.social Yeah even if games are playable offline you will not get the full thing if you don't have internet, which is a degraded experience.

@SuperDicq you're totally correct on that front. even stuff like gran turismo 5 that had optional online stuff feels a little limited. I couldn't play ps3 online until a couple years after I got it, so most of my experience with the system was offline
