If your best effort at regulating surveillance capitalists results in “give us €9.99/month not to see ads or use for ‘free’ with ads¹”, you should all probably resign and go hide your heads in shame.

¹ Not even turn off tracking, mind you, just turn off personalised ads. Not that “your money or your privacy” is better.

  @jmaris Does EDPS legislate? No. The EU/EU Council do, with varying levels of input by the EU Parliament (a parliament without legislative initiative; kind of like the kid’s table of parliaments).
  Who nominates the European Data Protection Supervisor? The European Commission. Who appoints them? The council/parliament.
  So, no, I don’t expect much from EDPS given its limited remit and I’ll continue to hold those with the actual power responsible if you don’t mind.

  (I’ve given up trying to change anything via political means while the politics are so institutionally corrupt as to be meaningless; while lobbying and revolving doors are rife; while Google and other surveillance capitalists set up shop around the corner from the parliament and enjoy unfettered access, while privacy legislation seemed only to be enforced when @noybeu get involved… nope, no thanks.)

  @aral @EU_Commission @EDPS so what is it you want to change about the underlying legislation (the GDPR)? Because either you are changing the law, in which case it is Commission, Council, and Parliament, Or you are applying the law, in which case it's DPO's, the EDPB and the EDPS.
  As for your opinions on Parliament, they are completely flawed. Parliament should have initiative, but it not having that doesn't make it the "kids table of parliaments". Parliament's successes speak for themselves.

  @aral @EU_Commission @EDPS @noybeu I don't use facebook, and very rarely log into instagram. I'm also unsure it is possible to freely consent if the alternative is paying, in particular in light of case law on this issue.
  As for your views on our ability to exact change through politics, they are dangerously cynical, and incorrext.. I'd invite you to look into the excellent work EDRi and AccessNow are doing in Brussels, and the positive changes they have made to laws.

  @jmaris Let’s not rewrite history. The EU did not fund Mastodon. Eugen did. The EU is now funding Mastodon *after* one person made it what it is.
  And that’s the exact issue with EU funding I was talking in my speech at the parliament however many years ago. Nothing’s changed.
  Our efforts are also entirely self/community-funded (not for lack of trying). Once the Small Web is out & sustainable, I assume some FOMO will kick in and they might fund a feature or two.
