    If you're tagged in a conversation you don't want to take part in, you can mute the conversation's notifications:

    1. Go to one of your posts in the thread you want to mute
    2. Click ⋯ and select Mute conversation
    3. If you haven’t posted in the thread, go to a post in the thread where you were tagged, then select ⋯ and Mute conversation
    4. If you still can’t find this option, go to your Notifications section, then click ⋯ and Mute conversation on one of the conversation’s posts there

      This can have the side effect of muting all replies to that "root" post. I wish we could mute off-branches of conversations stemming from ours.

      For example, the other day I made a post / reply, and two people started having a debate, tagging me but not really talking to me.

      Muting my post silenced people who were trying to engage with me.

      @lerekofatwgo

      I guess in that specific case, you could instead mute those two people specifically?

      By the way, when you mute a person, you can choose to do it temporarily, in the section marked "Duration" before you confirm the mute.

      Twitter has the option of you untagging yourself from the conversation, preventing future mentions. Something similar would be cool here!

      There's no direct way to do this at the moment, but one (sort of) workaround is to bookmark the thread and then check it again later.

      If you're comfortable using github, you can vote for thread following on Mastodon by giving a thumbs up to this issue: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/23702

      @feditips Is there a way to do the opposite: subscribe to an interesting thread, independently of me being mentioned? E.g. if someone asks a question I‘d like to know the answer to as well. Even if I chime in with a „would like to know as well“, I won’t be notified of any answer directly to the original author.

      Hmmm, not exactly? As outlined in this post https://mastodon.online/@lerekofatwgo/111399044898982811 that will also mute the offshoots. Sure, muting users is sort of an option, but it's not ideal, as I most often just want to mute an individual conversation in a thread and still see the rest if the branches/the people elsewhere
      Being able to go "no, I don't want my username to be tagged in this specific thread branch" is different

      Mute conversation in Mastodon does exactly this, it's just not specific to sub-branches of the conversation.

      @feditips Thanks! There’s also https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/7969, which to me seems to largely solves the same problem, but seems more likely to be implemented. So whoever wants that feature please vote!
