@ezio For most of the 20th century, AT&T was a strictly regulated government monopoly bound by the eponymous consent decree to only work in the field of telephone service while permitting it to have internal subsidiary companies do R&D over mostly whatever they wanted as long as they licensed it out to any company who asked under fair and reasonable terms. For a while this went great, and Bell Labs (their research division) did some of the most important inventions of the 20th century including the transistor, the laser, and Unix. Eventually that last one caught the eye of AT&T management, and they wanted to commercialize it themselves. Thru torturous negotiations with the government, they were allowed to do so in exchange for spinning out all their local telephone operating companies (the so-called "Baby Bells") which thru various incarnations eventually led to most of the phone and internet companies currently operating in the US.

@allison @ai also usps is a pain in the ass to work with. I worked in shipping for a long time and we had a contract with usps handled some of their packages for a bit. They are do fucking anal. They would repeatedly send us the same package as back because they didn't like how it was done. Like, for example, there was this one package Dog food came back multiple times because it was 71lb and they refused to handle anything over 70. Other shit like if the bag they want us To put their stuff in was too full.

@allison @ai Even worse, they will just send it back with no explanation. So there's multiple packages we're trying to figure out what we did wrong.

@SuzyCreamcheese @ai Yeah they are known for being ridiculously anal and if you don't have an insider to consult with and/or you aren't paying big money for the higher certified tiers you're basically screwed. Still would trust them any day over FedEx, UPS, and DHL.

@allison @ai The only thing I really order online is books and those come through usps no problems, no complaints. They used to ship babies and to be honest, if I handed them one I trust that it's not gonna be broken on the other side.

@SuzyCreamcheese @ai Yeah, for sure. I've heard people "joking" about shipping me thru USPS before and to be honest while it would definitely be an ordeal, I have confidence that I would come out intact on the other end which is something I do not believe any of the big three private carriers would see to.
