   Despite $246.9 million in taxpayer money, Forestry Corporation still lost $28 million
   "The Nature Conservation Council of NSW has today released a new report from Frontier Economics which reveals for the first time that hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars have been gifted to the taxpayer owned logging business Forestry Corporation NSW over the past five years."

   "The Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC) asked Frontier Economics to examine the financial and budgetary drivers behind the Victorian Government’s decision to accelerate the closure of its public native forest logging (NFL) – and how comparable these drivers are in New South Wales and Tasmania.
   Poor financial performance and associated budgetary burdens associated with State run NFL operations are common across Australian jurisdictions. Taxpayers are bearing the cost burden of these risky and persistently loss-making government businesses."

     @Bellingen I always assumed logging must be making truckloads of money, and that’s why they were ignoring the environmental destruction it causes. Nope, they’re it’s just government subsidised habitat destruction. So why do they continue, are they just propping up jobs?

     @LanceTurner @Bellingen Blimey, that’s legalised corruption. They’ve done a right number on everyone, too: when (native) logging gets talked about it’s framed as essential to the local economy. Nope, only 1000-odd jobs and most of them aren’t in native logging. Would not be hard to retrain those people if needed.

     Makes me angry, Tassie has some of the last great wildernesses in the world. Logging a habitat of that nature is inconceivable to me.

     @Brendanjones @Bellingen Nope, here in Tassie it makes huge losses too, the LNP govt keep propping it up because it's run by some of their big business mates (yes, they are that corrupt). The numbers for Tasmania make the NSW loggers look like small potatoes:

     @LanceTurner @Bellingen Argh. Infuriating. As a non-Tassie, I’ve never got how you could live surrounded by such lush nature but then vote for an obviously anti-green party. Well, I get it a bit - I lived on King Island for a couple of years and while the folks are lovely people they’re also conservative. Farmers seem to be the same everywhere.

     @Brendanjones @Bellingen It's absolutely criminal what's been happening here in Tassie. We also have MMG Australia trying to build a toxic waste dump in the Tarkine, one of the last pristine wilderness areas on Earth, and the corrupt liberal party is all for it. It's completely insane, yet stupid Tasmanians keep voting for these evil, corrupt bastards.
