  1. A letter captioned “Lease of life” saying “My landlord is insisting I remove my wildlife-friendly garden, and I am too afraid of eviction to refuse. He can only see neglect and mess. I've never seen so many bees and insects I don't recognise - in the summer my whole garden hums with life, a comforting racket. Dowdy suburban privet turns into a miracle if you let its flowers grow, and I've lost my heart to the clever cinnabar moth caterpillar, which eats poisonous ragwort to grow into a poisonous adult in turn. The impending Renters Reform Bill is welcome, but doesn't go far enough. Tenants need confidence to invest time, money and love in their gardens and fight biodiversity loss in their little half-acre of earth.
