   I can’t pretend to actually understand this; it feels like we’re talking about a metaphor that compares unlike things so I’m sure I’m missing something very sciency.

     Oh, this is fascinating. Going to deep dive and study this awhile. (I've been reading Bookchin lately and also John P. Clark -- who has an interesting critique of Bookchin's tendency to be Eurocentric.) So will be reading with that lens.
