kaia (kaia@brotka.st)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Nov-2023 17:22:15 JST kaia I have a #pcbuilding question:
the new GPU is very large. friend suggested that I need a new case. it sits directly on the PSU, covering half a fan on the GPU. but the PSU is closed on the top, so no air flow there.
I see how this is not ideal, but on the other hand the PSU is holding the massive and super heavy GPU up and the GPU pulls air from inside out anyway.
I just wanna skimp out on a new case, but if friend says I need one, then I guess I need one.-

「セル」cell (سل) (cell@pl.ebin.zone)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Nov-2023 17:26:36 JST 「セル」cell (سل) @kaia depends on how much power the gpu uses and how much of a workload you’re going to put in and how much noise you’re willing to tolerate
essentially heavy use - bigger case! occasional use - keep casekaia likes this. -

Get a new case.
The bigger the better. Big cases are very comfy and since you need to get one anyway you may as well go all out and get one that will last a looooong time.
Cases are the most underappreciated part of the puter.kaia likes this. -

miauz genyau (mia@movsw.0x0.st)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Nov-2023 17:28:57 JST miauz genyau @kaia@brotka.st you forgot the question
fwiw i’m fond of horizontal/rackmount cases because there’s no GPU sag and they often have airflow straight from front to back. tend to be kinda cramped though especially if you need the drive cageskaia likes this. -

Should be fine. You can always upgrade the case later if it does overheatkaia likes this. -

Spooky Pink 🎃 (can@haz.pink)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Nov-2023 17:29:44 JST Spooky Pink 🎃 @kaia I mean you can always try it with the current case, run a benchmark and check the temperatures. If it throttles, you can still buy a new case.

miauz genyau (mia@movsw.0x0.st)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Nov-2023 17:34:58 JST miauz genyau @kaia@brotka.st but yeah blocking off a fan is probably not good even if GPU temps look fine. might be getting hot in sections that don’t have sensors.
if there’s too much heat differential across the card then the thermal stress might cause cracks, but idk how much of an issue this really is in practicekaia likes this. -

grillchen (grillchen@brotka.st)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Nov-2023 17:55:35 JST grillchen @kaia while i like smol cases and smol motherboards. i think i shouldnt buy those anymore. to much of a hassel to connect all stuff with big hands... oh and i cant close my pc anymore because of the cpu cooler. kaia likes this. -

kaia (kaia@brotka.st)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Nov-2023 17:56:15 JST kaia @grillchen I don't know enough, but wouldn't this just mean it rests on the motherboard instead with full force? -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Wednesday, 01-Nov-2023 21:34:44 JST Birdulon @kaia If you're using the nouveau drivers it's never going to get hot enough to matter since it will be locked to a barely-above-sleep power state.
If you're doing anything with it, it's still probably not that much of an issue provided the fan is still spinning freely. If the fan is pressing into the PSU and not spinning freely, you might be able to get away with sliding something between the shroud and the PSU to give it a mm or two of clearance. Having half the fan intake covered will be slightly louder then normal, but it's unlikely to actually cause any problems for that particular 4090 which has an oversized cooler to begin with.kaia likes this.
