   In case you missed it, the official Mastodon Android app has been updated to include hashtag following and Mastodon's Lists feature! 🎉

   The latest version of the app is v2.2.0.

   Also, a reminder that you don't need to use the official app at all, you can get most features a lot sooner on third-party apps (e.g. Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Subway Tooter etc).

   Third-party apps for all platforms are listed on Mastodon's official site at https://joinmastodon.org/apps (scroll down past the official app).

     Yeah, the third-party ones seem to have a lot more options and faster pace of development.

     There wasn't even an official app until last year, it was only added because so many new people expected there to be one.

     Historically Mastodon has relied on third-party apps, and as it's an open platform the third-party apps have just as much access to Mastodon's features. The official apps don't have any kind of special privileges.

     Would strongly recommend trying third-party apps 👍

     Megalodon still doesn't do lists, although I keep checking the "edit timelines" button to see if it actually does anything useful. Not yet.

     Very glad they fixed the error that wouldn't let you edit alt text before, though.

     As Megalodon is a fork of the official app, perhaps they can integrate the official app's Lists support?

     It's only called official, and only exists, because new people were so used to the model created by Twitter, Facebook etc where a centralised company controls the network.

     New people were going on app stores and searching for "mastodon" and not finding anything so they assumed it didn't have an app.

     As far as I know, that is the main reason there even is an official app.

     @feditips @paspro Perhaps we should stop calling the „official“ Mastodon app official Mastodon app. Mastodon is open for every app and the „official“ one is not even providing the features other apps have, or at least quite late.

     For what it's worth, I always tell people to use third party apps.

     They are better apps, and it is also healthier for the Fediverse's long term survival that the apps are developed independently of the network.

     @feditips @paspro Sure I know and I also remember back that the official app developer declined to support the global timeline. Which was a big argument that time. Now it runs feature wise behind all the other apps. Therefore the suggestion to not call it official.
