99% of people stop using one of the more popular Nostr apps after 6 months. Not sure how it's measured.

@Zerglingman well rather from a marketing perspective, they are concerned just that people actually like what they're building since they're not selling anything

@graf it's a terrible idea, ms tried it for their app store to get developers for example and they got 100% flooded with pajeet demo apps.

@Moon the fact that they can’t acknowledge their own intern without having gibberish wrapping onto another line should tell them everything they need to know about user retention

@ai that is probably just because I am running my own fork of a client and it hasn't been updated in a while. It's probably my fault.

@Moon does it mean people dropped it after six months of usage, or that only 1% of users still use the app six months after the first install? The former would be insane, the latter seems like a fairly normal situation.

@piggo it is done by people in the bitcoin community but it functionally does not use a blockchain or bitcoin to operate. There is an event type for "tipping" bitcoin but it is completely optional and the network doesn't require or need or is enhanced from it in any way.

So honestly the issue probably isn't his app, but people noping out of the entire nostr sphere after around 6 months (I was one of them). Is this high? Probably. I wonder how this compares to other new social media apps though. Like maybe Gab's retention rate was 5% of users stayed over 6 months. 1% is obviously really low, and especially so when starting with the lower user count Nostr already has.

The only way to make people stay is to stop the spam & have people there to post about interesting things. I'm curious what the retention rate is for *all* nostr apps now. Does Amethyst fare better? How about Iris and Primal? Is the issue the apps or the protocol?

@Moon The way you do that is with some type of functionally useless obscure crypto in hopes that eventually it takes off and generates more users. Have their posts and activities "earn it" but also lame.

User retention is garbage because the UX is fucking garbage. It doesn’t help that if you’re not into bitcoin you’re not going to have much to talk about with the native userbase.

User discovery is somehow even worse than fedi, too, lmao

Despite all that I’m actually more positive on nostr now than I was 6 months ago, it proved to be more than a flash in the pan, and its positive properties are pretty interesting. Logging into any (nostr) app, with wildly different uses, instantly, with the same identity feels pretty magical.

Probably the single worst thing about nostr is not knowing who is seeing your posts.
