Fuckin hell the Touch Bar on my MacBook no longer lights up. Which means i have no way to control the brightness or volume (at least not accurately, it still responds to touch). At least this is one of the models with a physical esc key but still

Previous MacBook had a different stupid Touch Bar failure too and I’m so glad Apple has dropped this stupid idea

I mean all it takes is a complete disassembly including removing the screen from its hinges and a lot of fiddly little connectors that are easy to break and a million specific tiny screws, what could possibly go wrong

hm, replacement touch bars are like $45 and the process doesn't look *too* bad as far as things iFixit labels "difficult" are concerned

oh right the volume and brightness control is at least still available from the Control Center on the menu bar, so I'm not totally screwed

Me before getting wrist pain: I need a decent physical layout.

Me once I got wrist pain: Great, now I really wish things like actuation force would be on tech sheets of anything with a keyboard, it's likely just a matter of filling that stuff out anyway since manufacturers typically give out this info.

which isn't to say the macbook keyboard is *good*, it's just less bad than other laptops in my experience

but maybe someone else with similar chronic pain issues knows of a more comfortable laptop that also doesn't break down after two years?

i mean the main reason I stick with macbooks is because they have the least-shitty keyboards of any laptop I've used, like they don't have a ridiculous actuation force but also don't have a trauma-inducing hard bottom-out on them

unsurprisingly I'm getting lots of people telling me I should get a thinkpad, to which I should have mentioned that my Windows dev machine is a Thinkpad and I keep it on my desk specifically so I don't have to use its shitty fucking keyboard that gives me almost instant wrist pain

okay yeah $1050 for an actual working laptop is more than I want to spend right now

does anyone know of any good inexpensive Linux-friendly laptops with keyboards that won't put me in agony after 5 minutes? (like I already have an HP netbook that I use for random Linux shit but the keyboard is *agonizing*)

ok though it gives me a really bad taste in my mouth where the framework laptop prices are like "starts at $850" but that price doesn't include RAM or storage

this has me seriously considering getting a Framework laptop, especially since this laptop is just my tooling-around-on-the-couch one and I don't use it for music or art or whatever, I just do Internet shit from it

really anything that can run linux would be fine, although most laptops' keyboards are fucking awful, and macbook keyboards are at least not *total* shit

@fluffy I don't mean alternative layouts since you can just do that software-side quite fine.

I mean like, not missing a bunch of keys (like I've seen having to use fn+numbers to reach F1…F12 in such a conflicting way you'd get no TTY access in linux), half-size arrow keys (I wonder how their designers edit text), …

But it is a quite a shallow thing compared to just typing comfort or even outright accessibility, which we have various means to measure and describe, except most vendors just don't care.

@lanodan yeah unfortunately alternate keyboard layouts aren't all that useful for my particular thing either
