   It is a Handmaiden’s Tale level nightmare now in Texas, where Lubbock has become the largest county where it is illegal to travel through the county to receive abortion services in another state. This is what predictably happens when you throw a fundamental question of human rights “back to the states” to decide. We need Roe v. Wade and its legal protections codified.

     @georgetakei I'm old enough I remember as a kid in the 80s being taught about how horrible the Soviet Union was because you coudn't freely travel around the union without needing official permission and being stopped at checkpoints by police and demanded "show me your papers" and Republicans looked at the USSR and decided that sounds like a great idea.

     @toor @georgetakei yeah, it's already visible today. federal laws like DOMA and controlled substances prevented blue states from being progressive, and still do. you're asymmetrically considering the impact. i think letting voters in red states control my life in oregon is insane.

     @georgetakei it would better for human welfare if the states decided on virtually everything. then you always have a respite from bad laws and people can vote with their feet on where to live. game theory says this is the better system.

     @cshentrup @georgetakei Where this leads to is already visible today. Those who can afford it can move to highly sought areas with liberalism, good infrastructure, no abortion bans, etc.
     Those who cannot afford it have to accept all the GOP bible fascist crap to be able "to afford a house and living". That separation is already there. "you need to be able to afford to live without Christianist control of your life" as result.

     @cshentrup @toor @georgetakei in your 20s, yes. Most women who seek abortions have children already and are in a relationship. So they may not have that freedom of movement.

     @toor @georgetakei i grew up in rural southeast kansas and lived in brutal poverty, and yet had no problem moving to arizona in my 20s working at restaurants and other odd jobs. there are plenty of cheap places to live in blue states.
