   The effect I'm thinking about isn't really a panorama, it's like a highly elevated shot that captures a very very large distance but somehow shrinks the foreground and magnifies the distant parts so that they appear roughly equal and you get overloaded with detail. Altdorfer's Battle at Issus is the only thing I've seen that really captures this feeling.

     I saw this painting in the Pinakothek in Munich some years back.

     I took LSD, waited for the peak to pass, and then went there.

     The name Albrecht Altdorfer was burned in my mind that day. Will never forget.

     @jcbrand this painting is making me go mental. it was painted 500 years ago. it is a product of a blossoming western culture in the spring of youth, it shows more wisdom and humility in its scope than anything anyone can dream of today. there is only ashes now

     not many pagan subjects in Altdorfer's works lemme tell ya, it's all Jesus this, and Jesus that. funny old guy. those dead white men and their silly obsessions. you need to wait until mid-late 19th century before the culture starts withering until you start getting Frenchmen painting Zeus.
