just off the top of my head, 1 mile to 1 kilometer is like 1.6 kilometers, 1 gallon is 3.8 liters, and so on, it's not something simple like 1 mile is 1.5 kilometers, no more no less
1 gallon is 4 liters, no more, no less

The mile came from 1000 paces. Not that it really matters anymore, because people rarely walk long distances anymore.
For engineering or scientific use, you will be using measuring instruments, and the choice of standard is completely arbitrary. There's a conversion factor for every unit you can work with. The only thing that matters in these fields is that you adhere to the standard in use where you are working, because communicating measurements between people is what is important.

A mile is about 5,000 feet.
28 miles x 5,000 feet is 28 / 2 x 10,000
14 x 10,000
