   did any of you have parents that did anything?
   
   like have hobbies that didnt involve drinking beers and watching spectator sports?
   
   my definition of fun involves a lot more effort and going outside, and i wonder what effect this will have on my sons, as well as myself
   
   earlier this year while ice climbing i talked to this guy at the cliff who was clearly in his 50s who had his sons with him, they all seemed like rad normal people, that's my goal

     @dictatordave we never built anything prefab, my dad always built everything, by hand, no planning. Dog house, chicken roost, garage, we just started building. It was fun.

     @dictatordave we were never into sports, like at all. not watching or playing.
     
     We did go hunting every winter! A lot of walking and enduring very cold weather for a day or more, dragging a big dead deer back to the truck.

     @Moon that's a key it seems, bro in law i think has set a time bomb of disappointment for his one son by buying him a dirt bike to rebuild i fear will never be finished
     
     but that's cool tho its def important to teach kids how to do things and not just hand wave them away
     
     did yall engage in any sport or like challenging outdoor pursuits together?
     
     i think this is an issue within the last few generations, a lack of intergenerational machismo especially
     
     i have a simple philosophy for my kids development and i think it involve not following especially american pop culture's idea of how a society should function

     @MasterSimper @dictatordave we moved further into the country so we could buy more land, built a big pole building that just kept all the odds and ends so we could pick up parts and build things.

     @Moon @dictatordave My grandfather was like that. Started manual labour at 13 and went on to build a house, a sauna/guesthouse/garage building, a play house and a motorboat among other things. Being an orphan, he was dead set on carving out a life for his family and he sure as hell did just that.

     @leyonhjelm @Moon i read tommy caldwell's book the push, excellent book, and there's a common theme where he looked up to his dad as a kid because he was a climber and did like amateur body building comps, and the way he rights about his father is the way i want my kids to remember me one day
     
     it just seems like he was inspired so much by the man to persevere
