Re-installed Linux on the laptop, decided to check other #XMPP messengers.

    - Kaidan: I went with KDE so let's go native. Just started poking around when the preferences menu showed up corrupted. I just uninstalled.

    - Dino: Missing basic functionality, no obvious online presence indicator, application exits when I close the main window. can't even shrink to system tray. Uninstalled.

    - Gajim: Still almost as bad as Dino ever since the UI downgrade, but somehow it's still the most functional of them all. Grudgingly sticking with it.

Conclusion: I should drop everything I'm doing, assemble a team and write that XMPP client with the early 00's messenger UI of my dreams. :meowNeutral:

@wthinker is that still being kept up to date? Last time I had to jump through some hoops just to configure it for modern XMPP capabilities.

@shura I used to use PSI+ a few years back and moved on when it became clear that it's not really getting updates. I had to jump through some serious hoops just to get it up to par last time and I didn't feel like going through that again.

@Polychrome you did not check psi+ and tkabber. Both with they own disadvantages. You are right, all current clients are bad and seems like their developers does not know how IM client should looks

@Canageek it was the best until development just stopped as far as I'm aware. Last I checked OMEMO was only sort of implemented, need to check again.

      • Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

@Polychrome @thunderbird Thunderbird (the XMPP client) does not have E2EE and any other modern messaging feature, but the UI seems to be from the 00's.

@nicoco as someone who also volunteers my passion to build software without any sort of VC funding and limited resources, I will be harsh towards missing features and I will definitely expect people to be just as harsh to my software in return.

Gajim and Dino are not mobile clients. I fully expect to see presence as a feature.

@Polychrome Presence indication is not a basic feature of IM anymore. Most people use a mobile client, so they're always reachable, independently of their "presence". The most widespread Android client, Conversations, will always show you "online", even if the phone is locked or in DND.

Also, maybe consider being less harsh and dismissive on software built by passionate volunteers, without any sort of VC funding and very limited resources. Constructive feedback is always appreciated though.
