I am aware that you can still make emergency calls with cell phones w/o service as long as a SIM card is still installed. (and that it's still compatible with the cell service - it can't be TOO old)That you are getting an amber alert is news to me. Maybe that is a "feature".

Without a sim, how does the phone know what frequencies and protocols to use to connect? Or does it just try them all until one works? -

Sir Funk ?? (sophistifunk@noagendasocial.com)'s status on Thursday, 12-Oct-2023 01:08:12 JST Sir Funk ?? @mhjohnson @NoBeret there’s a “base level” protocol that sets out the rules between device and cell, which determines handovers between cells, which packets are for which device and the like, for which each device has a unique id. These have to be up without a sim, so that it can be used as a channel over which to negotiate the sim session. Over time more of the emergency features have been added to that base protocol so you can still call an ambulance and receive air raid / tsunami etc notices
