      I think federation is a long-game move. Many new servers spun up around Gab, including Spinster and Gleasonator. It inspired people to build the ecosystem. Now Truth Social and Gab are running the same software (Mastodon) but not federating. It's a shame.

      Sure. You have three choices at scale on the crusty, ridiculous, and stupid protocols of the Fediverse:

      1. Watch your servers melt because the protocols are indefensible;
      2. Spend all your money on more servers and bandwidth that no one uses; or
      3. Turn federation off.

      98% of Gab was insular at the time. It wasn’t worth spending another dollar on federation. So we turned it off.

      That was done on purpose, and I’d do it again if all things were equal. Federation added nothing but cost to Gab because no customer was using it, it was under constant attack depriving other tasks of attention, and I’m a ruthless bastard who doesn’t care at all about how loudly the people on the fediverse cry about my decisions.

      Reality: I was paid by the people using that website to build them a website they could use. They don’t care about the Fediverse, and federation was depriving them of performance and the development of the features they did want.

      So, we turned off federation, watched the people of the fediverse have a meltdown because that’s what they do best, and gave our customers what they wanted: More racism, and fewer troons/furries.

      @rob Could you elaborate on this? It's been bugging me for a while now. Why exactly is Gab incompatible with other Mastodon instances? Did Torba do an oopsie, was it something intentional?

      @Ghislaine @Bro-Drillard @DW2 I tried using a mobile app to open Gab. Apparently this was possible for a while, then the aps blocked Gab because muh rayesism, then some other people made forks allowing Gab, and now Gab doesn't run on anything. From what I could gather the code has "changed too much" compared to the Mastodon source code. Did Torba really intentionally defederate Gab? Why would you even do that?

      @M_uWu_ssolini @Bro-Drillard @DW2 It’s mastodong

      Who knows why they defederated they’re dumb so it could be any number of things

      I remember seeing screenshots of rob Colbert posts (gab tech guy) about how inefficient the federation process was and how it was burning up their servers

      @DW2 It sucks that all the good posters are scattered to the wind. One has to sign up, or install half a dozen different sites/apps.

      @Bro-Drillard @DW2 Annoying they don’t federate

      They’re running mastodon with federation stripped out

      @alex @rob @Bro-Drillard @DW2 @Ghislaine Someone should write a GNU-clause requiring federation in federation software released under that license.

      @rob @M_uWu_ssolini @Bro-Drillard @DW2 @Ghislaine I think something a lot of people who have never run an instance also don't get is this; you can in fact go into Mastodon settings and whitelist specific servers, which some of the most culty canceldon servers do. Or you can just whitelist nothing and get a completely siloed, non-federated instance like Truth Social, Gab, or a company creating their own "internal Twitter". Pleroma has a similar "federation" switch as well.
