gigabecquerel (gigabecquerel@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 20-Oct-2023 19:41:56 JST gigabecquerel The multiplier is done!
Transformer, multiplier and current limiting resistors are in oil, the 20 GOhm divider is installed and tested, now I only need the driver electronics and a nice box for this thing to stand on.
If I get excessive corona from the resistors I'll have to add grading rings at the end of the PCBs, but that will not be an issue.Maaaan this is going to be fun!

Gave the divider a nice coat of this stuff, the multiplier is nearing completion! -

gigabecquerel (gigabecquerel@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 20-Oct-2023 19:42:05 JST gigabecquerel Aaaand done!
Next step will be to glue the feedthroughs and fill it with oil, as well as designing / building the driver for it.
Sadly the divider didn't fit in there, so I had to order some PCBs to clip on the outside, they should arive any day now -

gigabecquerel (gigabecquerel@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 20-Oct-2023 19:42:06 JST gigabecquerel I am amazed!
Only had one mistake in there, one diode stack was oriented the wrong way, blocking any current flow. Luckily it was only three stages down from the top, so rotating it was fairly quick.
To test the thing I supplied 1.5 kV through 2 MOhm to the output, polarized so that the diodes are in forward direction.
This plot shows the measured stage voltages resulting from diode drop.
Looks pretty damn linear to me! -

gigabecquerel (gigabecquerel@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 20-Oct-2023 19:42:07 JST gigabecquerel Looks like the main multiplier is done!
Still needs ballast resistors on the output and a lot of checks to make sure no component is dead but holy shit it came out a lot bigger than expected -

gigabecquerel (gigabecquerel@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 20-Oct-2023 19:42:08 JST gigabecquerel Now, I have identified two issues here.
Firstly, and easy to fix: The tower needs to be more rigid, I'll laser some acrylic parts for that tomorrow.
Secondly:
Bit of a fuck up in dimensioning, I didn't take the thickness of the connectors as well as a few other parts into account and might have to cut it a few stages short.
If that doesn't deliver expected output I'll have to buy new threaded rods and a longer tube to contain it all, which would also not be too big of an issue. -

Now I have to wait a few more days with assembly, enough time to put some more thought into this thing to avoid mistakes like this happening again... -

gigabecquerel (gigabecquerel@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 20-Oct-2023 19:42:13 JST gigabecquerel Also, I didn't think about connecting the capacitors in series so now I have to come up with something, either additional wires or I replace half of the spacers with something conductive.
Was thinking about printing them from conductive filament, but I'm afraid it might shed some of the carbon particles into the oil... -

gigabecquerel (gigabecquerel@chaos.social)'s status on Friday, 20-Oct-2023 19:42:14 JST gigabecquerel This is going to get boring pretty quick, good thing I only have 14 stages left to do.
Decided to crimp the caps rather than solder, it saves time, doesn't introduce flux and doesn't heat the caps as much!
Cleaning flux from unsealed polystyrene parts doesn't sound like fun, just like heating them. -

And only 5 uH leakage inductance, so that should not be a concern for power.
Let's hope the isolation holds up! -

gigabecquerel (gigabecquerel@chaos.social)'s status on Saturday, 04-Nov-2023 14:33:40 JST gigabecquerel The driver is coming along as well!
I decided to go with a microcontroller to control it all, just for the learning effect.
And ever since I had a control theory lecture I wanted to implement a controller in software!
Now onto the PCB design...
