     That is another approach. Then drop the original and rename the temp and reindex.
     
     I think when we're done, about 50% will be gone.

     We were down for a day or so. Now I have a delete job running on the activities table. It took me a day to tune it so it wouldn't lock the table. Everything seems fine over here since about yesterday when I got the job to not lock the table. Here's the the job:

     Time wise, yes. But we had a lot less traffic in the beginning, so row wise it's only about half.

     Yes. I asked Lain about it. He said just delete activities before a certain date. It took me a few days to figure out how to create a loop to do that so we would avoid the lock a straight delete would cause. I'm not a programmer, so there was a bit of trial and error when creating and tuning that loop. There were several locks during that period.

     I could have created a new table and copied everything I wanted to keep over and then dropped and swapped and reindexed, but the table is live and very busy, about 30k rows added each day. I figured this way was easier, plus if it actually works, I could use the code as the base for a cron job.
