   Adding my own example, I bought my house in 2008 for $200k.

   Today (per the city assessment) that same house is worth $380k.

   I'd never buy this house today. The housing market is ridiculous.

     I could ABSOLUTELY not afford this house now, even on what feels like it should be a very good salary. This is a basic-ass split level, in no world should it be 800k
