No, because each account on a federated network is tied to a particular server. Each server only runs one type of software.
There is no central Mastodon HQ or BookWyrm HQ issuing accounts, it's just your specific server that handles the account.
However, you can follow and interact with accounts on other servers including servers running other types of software. For example @Iancylkowski is a PixelFed account but you can follow it.

I have a question. I have created an account on bookwyrm.social (@richard.degenne) and I realized that the account also shows on Mastodon when searching for it.
Does that mean I could have logged in to Bookwyrm with my Mastodon account? Is there a way to merge the two, or to have my Bookwyrm posts show up on Mastodon?
I've understood the principle of federation across Mastodon instances, but it's still not clear how it works across different software.

Not with this current structure, because the accounts are all on separate servers. Each server is like its own independent social network at a technical level.
Most people just mention their alt accounts in their profiles, so it's easy to see it's yours.
It's easy to tie accounts together if you're relying on centralised services like Facebook, Twitter, Google etc, but then you get problems with governance where the people in charge of those central things abuse their power.
