Funny you mention that. I think Trump's obvious buffoonery was a secret weapon. It allowed people not to take him, or his words, seriously.

My super-sharp mom hit this nail on the head way back in 2016. She remarked something to the effect that Trump was unique in US politics because everything horrible about him was always known, from the outset. -
