     I've tried running it on low powered VMs and it's just too expensive. The compression/encryption parts are written in C, but the python parts are soooo painfully slow.

     It uses a good bit on first run, but then caches its result so it should be better on future runs.

     Nobody seems to use Bacula because of the incredible complexity but I've finally given in to mastering it and holy shit this backup software is incredible.
     
     - blazing fast backup
     - blazing fast restore
     - ability to backup to multiple storage backends
     - ability to move backups between storage backends
     - ability to say "copy the 2 latest backups to this backend on a remote service"
     - automated restores, so you can e.g., have a fresh copy of production data on a development system every day, or just to prove that restores work
     - compression
     - encryption if you want it
     - simple deduplication through Base jobs, and possible to optimize for storage backends that natively handle deduplication
     - Windows support if you need it (does the windows snapshot thingy)
     
     if you have the enterprise version:
     
     - backup docker containers
     - backup kubernetes
     - backup VMs on various hypervisors
     - other native deduplication options
     - tons of things I can't remember

     @feld Bacula. Not user friendly, far from trivial to deploy, but predictable and consistent in its behavior, and I hate surprises… particularly those related to backups!

     Bacula really needs a native API and a good web interface. Baculum project has a REST API that they expose by using php to access the Bacula database and the Director service which I may try to replace...

     Interesting that nobody has mentioned using Amanda/Zmanda which to me has been a bit of an enigma. Looks good from a distance, but I've never seen it in practice.
