   Sounds like https://support.apple.com/en-us/102282 to me?

   1. Choose the Apple menu  > System Settings.
   2. Click Privacy & Security.
   3 Scroll down and click the pop-up menu next to "Allow accessories to connect," then choose which option you want.

     @thomasfuchs I’m absolutely not helping but I’m pretty sure the USB ports _should_ work on reset. I always use clamshell on a dock and it works. When it doesn’t, it’s a rarity that a reset/PRAM reset solves

     If you use your Mac laptop with the lid closed

     First, you need to allow an external display, a mouse, and a keyboard to connect to your Mac laptop. Then you can use your Mac with the lid closed (or with a docking station in which you place your Mac with the lid closed), and allow other accessories to connect without opening the lid.
