The wildest thing about watching Buffy after all the Joss Whedon revelations and the admissions of him actually being Xander is the realization that was a lie too. He's not Xander, he's one of the weird kids who tries to kill girls and put their body parts together to make some zombie sex kitten of his dreams. I mean, he did it on screen instead of in Sunnydale, but… potayto-potahto

@Terra The thing about Whedon is that I never understood the appeal in the first place. The original Buffy movie was amusing in a "watch it once for popcorn munching fun" sort of way, but despite everyone going on and on about what a great dialog writer he was, all I ever got were stereotype characters unnaturally trying to out-clever and out-scarcasm one another. I enjoyed the songwriting for Dr. Horrible, but the story felt problematic very quickly. 1/2

@Terra I remember being in this loathed minority in geek culture when I'd say that Joss Whedon's work just wasn't interesting or moving to me, and that I'd fallen asleep every time I tried to watch Firefly.
During those years, there were lots of young women at cons who'd wear these "JOSS WHEDON IS MY MASTER NOW" t-shirts. I kinda wonder what they now think about having worn a slogan like that. 2/2

@Terra Enjoying cheese is a pretty legit reason. You should see the garbage I watch and rewatch. But during Peak Whedon Cult years, he was treated as the gold standard of art and geek culture, none better, never to be replaced but merely succeeded. If you didn't agree, you hadn't watched it correctly. I know because of the number of people who insisted I watch it with them so I could watch it correctly.

@roadriverrail Oh I loved Buffy and Firefly specifically because of the cheesiness. B-grade comedy is my favorite, so I always loved it for that reason. Totally diehard Buffy fan because I can make fun of it as I watch it. That's my jam.

@Terra @KatS Yeah, and resonating with the cheesiness is fine. Hell, sometimes I get a hankering to watch a few episodes of Highlander: The Series...god, that show is worse than I remembered...and I unironically watch Fatal Future once a year. The thing about cheesiness is, like actual cheese, there are so many kinds and everyone has some they love and some they don't, and that's great.

@Terra @roadriverrail It's not just the cheese, though. There's also the way the actors overplay things now and then.
Buffy and Firefly: the ham and cheese sandwich.
