My GA586HX v2 (with K6-II processor) won't POST. Hopefully this is one of those boards which plays possum if the CMOS battery is flat. Otherwise I'm in for a Not Fun Repair. #retropc #retrocomputing

Phil M0OFX (philpem@digipres.club)'s status on Thursday, 31-Aug-2023 02:51:54 JST Phil M0OFX Here's the one I ordered incorrectly. Adaptec AHA-1740. EISA. Spoiler - you can put an ISA card in an EISA slot, but you can't put an EISA card in an ISA slot.
See the second and third photos to see why that doesn't work... -

Phil M0OFX (philpem@digipres.club)'s status on Thursday, 31-Aug-2023 02:52:00 JST Phil M0OFX Baby steps on the headend PC. New CPU fan arrived, so that's fitted. SCSI card should be here later today, which opens the door to installing the BlueSCSI to emulate the hard drives, hooking up a DDS drive and building a DDS tape to install UNIX from.
I also found a copy of 3C5X9CFG, so I can configure the Ethernet card. Lord knows if I have any switches old enough to support 10BaseT.

Phil M0OFX (philpem@digipres.club)'s status on Thursday, 31-Aug-2023 02:52:03 JST Phil M0OFX I do at least have the #analogcable headend software running under emulation - albeit slightly borked because of a bug in 86box.
Edit: specifically the bug is that 86box isn't emulating the WD90C30 PVGA1024 video chip correctly, the window resizes to 768 high but the graphics are drawn wrong.

Phil M0OFX (philpem@digipres.club)'s status on Thursday, 31-Aug-2023 02:52:04 JST Phil M0OFX Small update. Screw kit fixed the mechanical integrity of the PC. Motherboard was still flopping about a bit so I stuck a few rubber case feet under one corner to stop that.
50mm CPU fan has gone pop thanks to a broken blade. whoopsy. new one won't be here until Thursday.
CPU heatsink has fresh grease. Arctic MX4 seems like a huge waste on a K6-II.
Bodged in a PS/2 mouse port, it's ugly as sin but does the job.And Interactive Unix 4 won't install onto a CF card.

Phil M0OFX (philpem@digipres.club)'s status on Thursday, 31-Aug-2023 02:52:05 JST Phil M0OFX I've given up on fixing the case, for now. A bunch of the screws from my Maplin PC case kit aren't correct, and the PC case seems a bit warped. Oh, and the feet are missing.
I've ordered a bunch more stuff to go with the rivnut kit - notable a PC case screw kit that looks like it fell out of the 1990s... shame it doesn't include any of the plastic snap-in case standoffs. They're really hard to find!

Phil M0OFX (philpem@digipres.club)'s status on Thursday, 31-Aug-2023 02:52:07 JST Phil M0OFX Doing some more work on this machine today. So far I've found that the case is filthy. the power button sticks, the motherboard standoff holes on the m/b tray are the awful pressed steel ones and all of them are stripped...
... I've ordered a rivnut tool and some rivnuts. I don't know why I'm even trying to fix this AT case, but I am.
