What should I post? I don't know anymore. What do you want to hear from an open source designer?

James Just James (purpleidea@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 24-Aug-2023 20:32:10 JST James Just James @mairin I'd love to hear about the biggest limitations in open source tooling. Ideally as a list with explanations on why those features or bugs are important and even better if it is linked to open issues. Eg GIMP CMYK support if that even would count for your list. You have the tools expertise to know what should be prioritized. Blog it :)

Scott Williams 🐧 (vwbusguy@mastodon.online)'s status on Thursday, 24-Aug-2023 20:32:15 JST Scott Williams 🐧 @mairin I'd like to know what it's like using open source tools in a field that is still so predominantly proprietary heavy (Adobe, Apple, etc.), as well as advice for using and advocating for open source tools in that space.

Abandoned (doctormo@fosstodon.org)'s status on Thursday, 24-Aug-2023 20:32:17 JST Abandoned I'd like an panel discussion on the topic of using foss tools and supporting the foss industry and when it's justified to use a proprietary tool to get valuable foss work product done.

clacke (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Thursday, 24-Aug-2023 21:42:41 JST clacke @securepaul Yes! I want to know about this.
I went to a talk recently about this hoping to learn something, but their approach felt very corporate open source and was not what I was looking for. 😥
I was looking forward to an interesting analysis of what barriers keep designers from contributing to open source, but the talk was basically "give them recognition and merch!". I'm sure many people around here will have far more deeply considered answers than that!

Paul Moore (securepaul@fosstodon.org)'s status on Thursday, 24-Aug-2023 21:42:42 JST Paul Moore @mairin I'd be curious to hear how community projects looking for designer/UX help can go about finding people with that background who are willing to help.
Some projects naturally draw designer/UX oriented and talented people due to the nature of the project, others aren't so lucky and we need to go searching for help.
I have similar questions for people with a technical documentation background if anyone wants to chime in on that front too ;)

clacke (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Thursday, 24-Aug-2023 23:36:09 JST clacke @janxyz I think this interview answers your question:
> There's practical reasons for adopting Open Source tooling, there's many, many practical reasons [ . . . ]> [ . . . ] if you could try Penpot, or if you could try Inkscape, it will make it easier to work with you in the Open Source context, and I'll give one example [ . . . ]
> [ . . . ] a particular upstream Open Source project that's pretty well known. They had engaged with some designers, and the designers used a ... unnamed, cloud-based design tool to give them a whole set of mockups and templates and stuff [ . . . ]
> [ . . . ] they didn't renew the subscription, so by the time I got to the project , I'm clicking through to all the mocks, they're gone [ . . . ]
> [ . . . ] that project was set back so far from a proprietary tool being introduced into the mix, so having files in open standard-based formats and in Open Source tooling means that project won't be left high and dry when you've moved on
