Met a fascinating pair of IT students last night whose hobby is creating fake people, millions of them. Fuck, billions for all I know. The fake people, not the IT students

So, they've automated a 'primitive ai' (their words) to randomly generate people and sign them up to everything! All the socials and rewards programs, anything that thirsts for personal data. They don't post or use their skills for evil (I fucking would), they just want to collapse the system

'We're going to push enough shit data everything becomes worthless

'Our hypothesis is it already is. Most popular SM? Insta. Even the "real" people are fake

'So for a donation of $20 you can fund 85k new fake people with which we'll further clog this absolute bullshit.'

    Sign me up, kids

(And yes, I'm aware they probably blew that cash on weed but the concept is solid and they should be rewarded for it)

@lritter @fixatedpersonsunit no. The reason for that is 'boundless (tech) corporate greed'. Those kids have nothing to do with it.

@fixatedpersonsunit so they think that the way to fix a broken system is by throwing even more bullshit into it and possibly push the system to its breaking point? This is the wrong way. Surely, These tech geniuses can come up with a better solution.

@fixatedpersonsunit we need a lot more of this. It needs to be everywhere, and public. Make it a distributed network that automatically floods any ad riddled social media with fake accounts. Take data for the fake accounts from real public accounts, just randomly mix the data points to avoid detectable patterns.

If advertisers have to take into account that 50% of accounts could be fake, they won't pay for that and there will be less ads.

@tychosoft @fixatedpersonsunit I understand. It just seems counterintuitive to have tech geniuses doing this instead of trying to fix the system or creating a new properly functioning system.

OK, found them (more accurately, they found me) and it didn't go well

'You splashed us all over Mastodon.'

'Not intentionally. No wait, it was intentional. Was drunk. You bought the second beer!'

      'And they like us?'

'Read the feed. They fucking love you. Make a business out of that shit.'

'A business predicated on ruining our own industry.'

      'Exactly.'

@fixatedpersonsunit The worries in this thread about a future with an internet filled with construct identities are quite interesting.

Treating misinformation campaigns separately, what would be so bad about such a future?

If your interaction is meaningful then what do you care?
