in short, you don't care about the "special interest",
you don't have to have one to be federated in the fediverse.
My advice: if you feel like it, set up your own mastodon, keep your current account as a "backup account", and in a few months you'll see whether you want to keep your current account or your own instance. ;)

@thomasfuchs Geographical instances seem to be the best non-special interest solution. There's a huge amount in everyone's life that is regional from weather to local politics, so if you lack any predisposition to some topical server, that's a good choice.
I went with a Mastodon. Host personal server before I learned about the good regional one here.

@thomasfuchs People do move, but outside of a region probably less often. And then many people will retain some degree of continued self-association with the previous area, reducing the "move server" pressure.
I'm from NYC but have been living in California nearly half my life. Still I read email and Usenet via a NYC ISP.
