@gracie@dantescanline fair enough I did mischaracterize it with that word. And yeah I'm a couple sections in now and I don't disagree at all with what it's saying so far. I've always been pretty nihilistic towards any actual chance of anarchism happening, and find the idea of it happening nationally let alone globally utterly laughable, but that's never stopped me from wanting to fight, rage, live, and help others anyway.
@anarchopunk_girl@dantescanline it is definitely not a doomer zine, & I’d encourage you to read it before writing it off like that, but it’s also not hopeful in the same sense that people expect “revolution will halt & also undo the atrocities of colonial-industrial climate assault” & it doesn’t do that.
@dantescanline cool, I'll give it a read. It seems short and very easy to understand so far. Can't promise I'll finish cuz, yk, functional neurologic disability shit, but yeah. I mostly just didn't want to commit to another post-left style "none of this means anything and we should do nothing" or an-prim "insulin? Adderal? Trans healthcare? Just get used to your bodies" thing lol
@anarchopunk_girl 100% not doomer, it's concerned with realistic and sober action to take. i think it has some anti-civ vibes but more in the way that a lot of critiques that anti-civ has are right (large scale ecological destruction is built into state society, and that sucks!)
@dantescanline this does sound anti civ tho "The environmental niche that civilisation (class divided agriculturally-sustained city culture) developed in is on the way out."
"With decreasing family size already a global norm in much of the world, it is the ability of industrial medicine and hygiene measures to enact death control that is now key. The human population, at least in business-as-usual projections, will continue to rise until at least 2050 as long as those alive today live their expected lifespans and have the expected number of children.
However, we do not have to wait until then to overshoot the planet’s human carrying capacity (its maximum permanently supported load) as we have probably done so already."
Sure this guy probably thinks the "excess population" is white people in global north western countries but I don't even think that makes it much better, it just goes from being racist to just ghoulish.
This excerpt just killed my will to read it thought.
I just have a severe discomfort about talking in "overpopulation" because people in my country are being killed left and right. And there is always a pervasive context of controlling "certain" populations of the country. (It is usually a code for indigenous/traditional communities and black people).
@AnAnarchist@dantescanline yeah that's why I've perpetually put it off. I tend to really get fixated on emotionally taxing ideas in an unhealthy circular way, and it can be really horrible despite my generally resilient emotional equilibrium. I'm just waiting till I have a stable time to read it.
@anarchopunk_girl@dantescanline Advance warning (largely for others seeing this recommendation): Blessed is the Flame is extremely emotionally difficult to read. It's powerful, but it explores the darkest parts of history in order to express the spirit of nihilism.
