    As I posted yesterday, the easiest way to follow and interact with PeerTube accounts is from your existing account on Mastodon etc (thread is here: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/110917553420332553).

    However, if you want to publish videos on PeerTube you will need a PeerTube account. This can be either on someone else's PeerTube server, or you can start your own PeerTube server. You cannot use your Mastodon account on PeerTube.

    Signing up for PeerTube is where it gets a tiny bit more complicated than Mastodon etc.

      Videos take up a lot more resources than text or images, and they're much harder to moderate, so PeerTube servers tend to be more careful who they grant accounts to.

      The owner of the server is the one paying the bills, and they don't have Google's limitless resources. On the flip side, PeerTube servers are ad-free and much more privacy-friendly than YouTube/Google.

      The owner is also legally responsible for content.

      Basically, be considerate of the server owner when uploading on PeerTube!

      Having said all that, here are some good well-run servers which are currently open to sign-up requests:

      Diode.zone
      https://diode.zone/signup

      Spectra.video
      https://spectra.video/signup

      Tube.tchncs.de
      https://tube.tchncs.de/signup

      There are also many other servers accepting sign-ups, but be careful as not all are well-run.

      But, you don't have to use someone else's server at all. There are many ways to set up your own PeerTube server ranging from non-techy to slightly techy to very techy.

      If you want to start your own PeerTube server, there are three methods:

      - Non-techy people can use a managed hosting service, where you pay a monthly fee and they do the techy stuff for you (see the PeerTube section on https://growyourown.services/grow-your-own-social-network/).

      - Moderately techy people can use software like @yunohost which makes PeerTube easier to install & manage (more info
      https://yunohost.org).

      - Very techy people can install PeerTube manually using the official docs at https://docs.joinpeertube.org

      @ke7zum

      15 gigabyte 2 hour videos are probably going to be too much for most servers. There just wouldn't be enough resources for this on free accounts, someone has to pay the bill.

      Google pays the bill by spying on people and stuffing their sites full of adverts.

      @feditips Thanks. I was trying to find one yesterday but that peertube channel only accepted 5 mb videos at 5 gigs per day. considering my shorts are 40 mb in size, and my youtgube videos cvan be 15 gigs in length for 2 hours? Yeah not goign to work. Now if it could transcode thnen remove ther raw contgent I upload that would be nice. I would set up my own except the process seems long and very involved.

      I'm not talking about Linode, I'm talking about actual managed hosting services aimed at non-techy people.

      Have a look at the PeerTube section on https://growyourown.services/grow-your-own-social-network

      @feditips I looked at linode and, yeah, no thanks. At least, not right now. lol! Are ther managed hosting services such as masto.host for mastodon which can help you set one of these up? I'd love to see taht in a resources section on peertubes site, or mayber in a general userguide somewhere.

      @ke7zum

      It depends on the host and the plan you're using. Livestreaming takes more resources so it may cost more.

      @feditips @yunohost only issue with peertube via yunohost is that several of the options are not enabled by default. Also livestreaming really doesn't work well with PT under YH due to how YH works....

      If you're hosting your own livestreaming, OwnCast might be a better option. I just did a thread about it. If you're able to use YunoHost, you will probably be able to use one of the installation options at https://owncast.online/quickstart/

      @feditips @yunohost of course, but owncast is fairly limited as well. I have overseen hundreds of livestreams and the platforms at the moment are all over the place. Not wanting to get into an argument about it but they are all crying out to move to newer ways. Youtube has just made a huge set of changes that owncast and the others need to do really. If Peertube gets on the rtmp enhanced bandwagon it would be awesome. I have a peertube instance ad 3dctube.3dcandy.social btw...

      @3dcandy @yunohost

      OwnCast and PeerTube are free open software made by hardworking volunteers who depend on donations to carry out the work on the platforms.

      All I can suggest is trying to support them with code or donations, and if there's a specific problem to let them know so they can fix it.
