   Is Signal like the de facto private communication tool for talking with your friends? The reason I'm hesitating is the centralization and the phone number thing.

     @Mayobrot it is de facto. Even though ideally Session or something based on XMPP would be better, it's what I'm using with my friends mostly bc, well, its what they all already had

     I honestly don't know if my friends have it or not, but I guess it's easier to convince them of using that if it's popular. Thanks!
